About Dr. Ellsworth

H. Scott Ellsworth, MD, is an orthopedic surgeon specializing in shoulder and sports medicine. He is committed to helping patients understand their treatment options, make informed decisions about their musculoskeletal health, and return to the activities they love.
Dr. Ellsworth believes that every patient deserves the opportunity to clearly understand their condition and the options available to them. He takes an educational, collaborative approach to care, working closely with each patient to develop a treatment plan that aligns with their individual goals and lifestyle. Whether helping someone return to the activities they enjoy or addressing a condition that is limiting their quality of life, his goal is to empower patients to feel confident in their care.

His interest in orthopedic surgery began with a lifelong desire to help others. He was drawn to orthopedics because it combines his passion for helping people with the opportunity to work with his hands and make a direct, meaningful impact on patients’ lives. He finds particular fulfillment in helping patients relieve pain, restore function, and get back to doing the things they love.

Dr. Ellsworth earned his Bachelor of Science in Biology from Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, before earning his medical degree from The University of Texas Medical School at Houston. He completed his Orthopedic Surgery Residency at the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC), followed by a fellowship in Shoulder and Elbow at Washington University in St. Louis, where he further developed his expertise in shoulder conditions and sports medicine.

Prior to joining Swift Institute, Dr. Ellsworth practiced with Kansas City Orthopedic Alliance from 2019 to 2026. During this time, he also served as adjunct clinical faculty for the orthopedic residency program at UMKC, where he contributed to the education and development of future orthopedic surgeons. His professional experience and commitment to education have helped shape his approach to providing thoughtful, evidence-based orthopedic care.

Dr. Ellsworth is actively involved in the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons (ASES), where he serves on committees and contributes as a reviewer for the Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery (JSES). He continues to participate in orthopedic research, has recently presented his work at national meetings, and is part of a design team developing a shoulder arthroplasty implant. These ongoing academic and professional pursuits allow him to remain engaged with advancements in shoulder care and contribute to the continued evolution of orthopedic treatment.

Outside of medicine, Dr. Ellsworth enjoys staying active and spending time with his family. He loves playing golf and pickleball—what he jokingly considers a head start on his retirement hobbies—as well as hiking, boating, and watching his children play sports. Dr. Ellsworth and his wife have four children, all of whom inherited his red hair. When he has the time, he also enjoys cooking and is often in charge of Sunday dinner at home.

Dr. Ellsworth sees patients at Swift Institute’s Mica Drive location in Carson City, where he provides specialized orthopedic care focused on the shoulder and sports medicine.
